Welcome to Year 5!

Welcome to our Year 5 class page! I am delighted to be teaching Year 5 and look forward to sharing an exciting and successful year with the children.

I absolutely love teaching and believe that learning should be exciting, engaging and fun. I want every child to feel happy, confident and enthusiastic about coming to school, while also being encouraged to challenge themselves and achieve their very best.

In Year 5, we will explore lots of interesting topics, ask questions, solve problems and develop our independence as learners. I believe education is about much more than what happens in the classroom. My aim is to equip children with the knowledge, skills, confidence and resilience they need to succeed, both at school and in their future lives.

Most importantly, I want our classroom to be a place where every child feels valued, supported and proud of their achievements. Together, we will work hard, celebrate our successes and have plenty of fun along the way!

I am really looking forward to a fantastic year together.

PE Days

Our PE day is on Tuesday, and we swim on a Thursday morning.
We wear black shorts or trousers, a white T-shirt, and trainers.

For swimming, you will need: a swimming costume or trunks/shorts, a towel and a swimming hat.
Please remove earrings on both days for safety.

 Home learning

We need to complete 15 minutes of Times Table Rockstars.  This should be completed independently with minimal support and supervision.

We are given spellings on a Monday which should be practised, and activities completed by Friday that week. Sometimes we may need adult support to help us practise and to test that we have learned our spellings.  

Reading is a vital lifelong skill, and we must read at least 3 times per week at home with either an adult or independently.  Please complete the reading record and add some details so I know what you enjoyed or what questions you were asked.                                                                                                                                

We must bring our reading books and records to school every day to support our reading. 

What we do in our class 

 In Year 5, we are busy learners! We work hard, support one another and take pride in everything we do.

Our lessons are designed to be engaging, purposeful and challenging, giving children opportunities to explore new ideas, ask questions and make connections with what they already know. We enjoy practical activities, discussion, problem-solving, investigation and opportunities to be creative.

We also encourage children to become increasingly independent, take responsibility for their learning and develop the confidence to have a go, even when something feels challenging.

We believe that mistakes are an important part of learning, and we celebrate effort, progress and achievement. Most of all, we want Year 5 to be a classroom where children feel safe, included and excited to learn.

Our Curriculum

In Year 5, we follow a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that builds upon the knowledge and skills children have developed in previous years and prepares them for the next stage of their learning.

Throughout the year, children will develop their knowledge and understanding across English, maths, science, geography, history, computing, art and design, design technology, music, PE, RE and PSHE.

We aim to make learning meaningful, memorable and exciting. Children are encouraged to make connections between their learning, develop their vocabulary, think deeply, ask questions and apply their knowledge and skills in different ways.

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum, and we use a range of high-quality texts to develop children's fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and love of reading.

As well as developing academic knowledge, our curriculum helps children become confident, independent and resilient learners. We provide opportunities for children to work collaboratively, solve problems, be creative and develop the skills and attitudes they will need for a successful future.

Most importantly, we want every child to experience success, feel proud of their achievements and develop a genuine love of learning.
