PSHE at Yohden Primary School

Intent

Our PHSE/RSE curriculum intends to deliver a curriculum that is inclusive and accessible to all and will maximise the outcomes for every child. We follow the EC Publishing scheme of learning (based on The PSHE Association’s Programme of Study) weekly, enabling children to become healthy, confident, independent, and responsible members of society. It aims to help children understand how they develop personally and socially and tackles many moral, social, and cultural issues that are part of growing up mindfully. Children are provided with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. At Yohden Primary School, we aim to promote and reflect British Values in all we do.

Personal Development & British Values

At Yohden Primary, we promote pupils’ self-esteem and emotional well-being and help them to form and maintain healthy relationships. Our curriculum allows our pupils to learn to respect themselves and others and move safely from childhood, through adolescence, into adulthood facing any challenges which may arise along the way. We create an awareness of religious, cultural, and moral values with respect for different ethnic groups, religious beliefs and ways of life. During lessons, diversity and difference are recognised, appreciated, and celebrated.

Implementation

Planning and Assessment

  •     PSHE/RSE units are planned and taught using EC Publishing’s long-term planning documents and the corresponding lesson resources
  •     All lessons can be edited to support learning, e.g. for SEND/GD learners
  •     Teachers use the PSHE/RSE progression document to support their planning and teaching of skills, knowledge and understanding.
  •     Assessment is judged against statements from the PSHE Association Programme of Study learning opportunities.
  •     RSE lessons in KS2 ensure both boys and girls are prepared for the changes adolescence brings, drawing on the Science National Curriculum objectives, which relate to the human life cycle and how a baby is born and conceived through fertilisation.
  •     Planning includes opportunities to learn British Values as well as the Rights of a Child (UN Convention)

Teaching and Learning

  •     Teachers evidence their learning in a PHSE/RSE floor book, which is worked on throughout the year. Some of our PSHE themes are fed into weekly assemblies.
  •     In Autumn 1, all Year Groups create a class set of expectations, which allows children to have a voice in how they think their classroom should be and to quickly establish agreed-upon class learning behaviours.
  •     Both KS1 and KS2 have a Zones of Regulation Unit at the beginning of the academic year.
  •     Lessons should begin with a 5-minute retrieval from previous lessons to support PSHE/RSE knowledge.
  •     Activities in lessons are to focus on PSHE/RSE skills, knowledge and understanding.
  •     Lessons should include a range of learning activities. Discussion rather than written work is encouraged. This is beneficial to the children as it removes barriers to learning and supports the development of speech and language.
  •     Every week, each class has a 15-minute Zones of Regulation session in which the teacher discusses the different zones, how students think and feel in the zones, and what might be in ‘their toolkit’ to help them return to the Green Zone.
  •     Teachers should only keep notes as necessary to inform their assessment of the children’s knowledge and understanding.
  •    Lessons address and teach British Values, and British Values are displayed throughout the school.
