French at Yohden Primary School
Intent
At Yohden Primary School we have chosen French as a focussed Modern Foreign language, as this will enable children to build a good foundation to help prepare for their secondary school. French is taught from Year 3 to Year 6 to help prepare those children to better understand how to articulate English in Key Stage 2 before they continue their education in Key Stage 3. Students will acquire language learning strategies for memorisation and retrieval as well as for listening, reading and understanding. We aim for our children to appreciate and be able to copy the sound of the language at text level through songs, stories and rhymes.
British Values and Personal Development
Students can explore individual liberty using a variety of media; texts, audio and video. In French classes there will be opportunities to discuss tolerance and mutual respect through class discussions and the choice of materials which are studied. In addition, the student code of conduct is the basis for student behaviour. Good working relationships in the classroom promotes effective learning. These are based on mutual respect and tolerance. Within lessons, children are provided with opportunities to appreciate and understand the French culture, as well as being able to know the similarities and differences between themselves and others and among families, communities, and traditions.
Implementation
When teaching MFL teachers will:
- Ensure all children in KS2 are taught weekly French lessons.
- MFL is encompassed with the four key skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
- The 4 skills will be taught in lessons with a focus on reading in the last lesson of units.
- Learning of Salut is organised around topics and themes which starts with core learning in Year 3 to support future language learning.
- French is taught through practical activities such as games, songs, stories. This helps to improve memory and recall.
- Children are provided with opportunities to engage in conversation by asking and answering questions, expressing opinions and responding to others and be able to speak with increasing confidence and fluency.
- At the start of new learning units’ key vocabulary displayed in back of book from Salut STP.
Planning and Assessment
- French units are planned and taught using Yohden’s Long term and Medium-Term planning documents, using guidance and planning ideas from the Salut scheme of work.
- Teachers use these planning documents to help plan lessons, using the additional resources and interactive games and activities.
- Teachers use the French progression document to support their planning and teaching of the main strands of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
- We use the National Curriculum to ensure that we are covering the appropriate aims and objectives.
Teaching and Learning
- Teachers are to record speaking lessons at least once per term and evidence this in OneDrive.
- Start of lessons are to have 5-minute retrieval from previous lessons to support French knowledge.
- Activities and games are to focus on French skills, recall abilities, knowledge and understanding.
- Marking: learning objective highlighted green if successful. Children to be given challenges using a triangle when applicable, at least once per unit.
- Lesson structure: 5-minute retrieval practice, 5 minutes introducing new vocabulary, then 20 minutes independent learning using a range of activities and games.
