Art at Yohden Primary School
Intent
At Yohden Primary we aim to provide lessons that cover the skills required to meet the aims of the National Curriculum with a bespoke curriculum which engages pupils and gives them purpose. The intent is to ensure all pupils produce creative, imaginative work. Children have the opportunity to explore their ideas and record their experiences, as well as exploring the work of others and evaluate different creative ideas. Children will learn to become confident and proficient in a variety of techniques. Primarily drawing, painting, sculpting but also including other selected craft skills, e.g. collage, printing, weaving and patterns. Children will also develop their knowledge of famous artists, designers and craft makers. Children will also develop their interest and curiosity about art and design through lessons offering skills progression, knowledge progression and offering children the opportunity to ask questions and demonstrate their skills in a variety of ways. In Pupil Voice our children have discussed how they enjoy art and they find it a good outlet for their emotions and feelings. Our art curriculum also focuses on the surrounding area with examples of artists, designers and craftspeople from the North East. However, we also cover artists from the UK in general and other countries. This is an to expose the pupils to a wide diet of art to ensure they have equal opportunities to experience a variety of cultures and groups which they may not get at home. We have diversity and equality built into our art curriculum.
Implementation
Art should be taught in unit blocks at least once a term using the progression of skills and knowledge documents to ensure that outcomes are met and that children have consistent opportunities to develop their art. Each key stage focuses on different themes to ensure continued interest in the subject as well as acquiring new knowledge. The lessons will develop pupil’s techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. Children should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to our culture and creativity.
KS1 children’s work is recorded in a floor-book and will have some adult added aspects (e.g. vocabulary etc.)
Children from Year 3 to Year 6 have sketchbooks to record their work in. Yohden embraces a sketch book method allowing the pupils to show a project style. We believe:
- Sketchbooks should be used to gather, collect, experiment and reflect. Sketchbooks should be a place of discovery.
- Sketchbook content should be treated with respect. Teachers should not mark directly in the book unless scribing for a child. Teachers should use one to one or small group discussion to help articulate sketchbook content.
